Quick Answer
Rue is the enchanted ribbon guardian bound to Faye's sword — one of her two companions, voiced by Perlina Lau. Rue's job is to keep a devastatingly powerful blade out of the wrong hands; once Faye earns Rue's trust, the sword becomes her main weapon, and the ribbons whip out during strikes to reach distant foes.
Who is Rue?
The official PlayStation Blog describes Rue as “the enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping the devastatingly powerful sword in her care from falling into the wrong hands.” That's the whole pitch: Rue is the safeguard on a weapon too dangerous to leave lying around. When Faye arrives inthe Everywhen and earns Rue's trust, the sword-and-ribbon becomes the core of her new fighting style. Alongside Phranque, Rue also helps move the story along — the companions are the ones who reveal to Faye that this is the afterlife of the gods.
Rue is not the sword
A common mix-up: Rue isn't the blade — Rue is the living ribbons attached to it. In the demo, when Faye assumes she's talking to a sword, Rue corrects her: “I'm not the sword, I'm the ribbons, obviously. And my name is Rue.” In combat, Rue isn't a sidekick standing off to the side — Rue is part of the weapon in Faye's hand, the ribbons extending to strike distant enemies and feed her fast, ground-to-air combat.
